The battle was fought on 14 October 1066 and resulted in the defeat and death of King Harold II. William’s victory led to the Norman Conquest of England, transforming the country’s ruling elite, architecture, language and governance.

Following his victory, William ordered the construction of Battle Abbey on the site where Harold is believed to have fallen. The abbey served as both a religious foundation and a lasting symbol of Norman authority in England.
