Discover Lacock: Historic English Village

Lacock is a beautifully preserved village in Wiltshire, renowned for its historic streets, traditional stone cottages and timeless atmosphere. Unlike many villages, Lacock has remained largely unchanged for centuries, making it one of the most authentic examples of traditional English village life.

Much of Lacock is owned and protected by the National Trust, ensuring that its medieval layout and historic buildings remain intact. This makes it a favourite destination for visitors seeking history, charm and a genuine sense of the past.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF LACOCK

Lacock dates back to the medieval period and developed around Lacock Abbey, originally founded as a nunnery in the 13th century. Following the dissolution of the monasteries, the abbey was converted into a country house.

Because the village was never heavily modernised, its streets, cottages and layout have remained largely unchanged. This preservation has made Lacock one of England’s most important historic villages and a living snapshot of rural life from centuries past.
