A BRIEF HISTORY OF ALNWICK

Alnwick developed around its castle, first built shortly after the Norman Conquest to control England’s northern frontier. Over centuries, the castle became the seat of the powerful Percy family, Earls (later Dukes) of Northumberland.

The town grew as a market centre serving the surrounding rural area, retaining its historic layout and character. Today, Alnwick remains closely associated with its castle and regional identity.
